In what started as a routine furniture cleaning task, a man stumbled upon something that has since captured the attention of numismatists across the country. Tucked underneath an old coffee table in a suburban home, a small coin taped to the underside of the wood has now been declared a “historic find” by experts.
The discovery took place in Ohio, where 34-year-old Jonathan Moore was helping his parents move out of their decades-old house. While lifting and cleaning furniture, he noticed an odd bump beneath the surface of their vintage coffee table. What he found taped underneath wasn’t a forgotten note or spare key — it was a coin sealed in old yellowing tape.
“I almost didn’t bother with it,” Moore said in a local interview. “But I’m glad I did.”

A Coin from Another Era
Once unwrapped, the coin revealed its identity — a 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar, one of the earliest silver dollars ever minted by the United States. The coin appeared worn but surprisingly well-preserved for its age. According to initial evaluations, the coin may be one of only a few hundred surviving examples in existence.
Coin expert Dr. Laura Beckman of the American Numismatic Society confirmed, “This isn’t just a rare coin — it’s a piece of American history. The 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar is believed by many to be the first silver dollar ever officially struck by the U.S. Mint. It represents the birth of America’s currency system.”
Hidden in Plain Sight
What’s baffling experts even more is how such a valuable artifact ended up taped beneath a coffee table. Moore speculates that the coin might have been placed there by his grandfather, a known World War II veteran who had a habit of hiding cash and small valuables in unconventional places.
“There were rumors in our family about grandpa hiding money in books, behind picture frames… but no one ever mentioned a coin like this,” said Moore. “It’s surreal.”
Dr. Beckman believes the coin may have been hidden decades ago and simply forgotten. “Many older collectors didn’t trust banks or safes. It wasn’t uncommon for people to stash precious items in creative spots — but this is an extraordinary case.”
What Makes It So Valuable?
While the coin’s condition plays a role in its value, the historical importance carries significant weight. Coins from 1794 are not only rare but symbolic of the nation’s earliest attempts to establish a unified monetary system.
According to recent auction results, similar coins have fetched millions. In 2013, a 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar sold for over $10 million — setting a world record for the most expensive coin ever sold.
Although Moore’s find may not reach that figure, early estimates place its value well into six or even seven figures depending on authentication and grading.
Next Steps
Moore has since sent the coin to be officially authenticated and graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). He hasn’t yet decided whether he’ll sell the coin, donate it to a museum, or keep it in the family as a treasured heirloom.
“It’s part of our family’s story now, but it’s also part of the country’s story,” he said.

A Reminder to Look Closer
This surprising discovery is once again igniting interest in collectible coins and hidden treasures. Experts remind people to look carefully around their homes — in drawers, attics, and yes, even under old furniture.
“Sometimes history isn’t locked in a vault or buried underground,” Dr. Beckman noted. “Sometimes, it’s just waiting under a coffee table.”
